The conceit of answering a series of letters by Lady Worthington was cloying. the information about Turkish life was good. The writing now and then was pedestrian, but the unusual subject made it worthwhile.
I have started reading the book and I might say it is going really good. There are pictures of the places which are described in the book. Also, it is very easy and fast to read it because it is written in letters. Every letter is about 5-10 pages so it is not hard to follow either.
Almost ten years ago (2007), my wife and I returned to Turkey after a forty year absence. "Kadriye" Branning's cleverly crafted book awoke with unerring accuracy the sheer amazement we experienced that warm August day in 2007, which was assuredly much different than the warm August day we experienced in 1964! In our absence, a magic wand had been waved, replacing 60s and 70s land-yachts with minivans; kebob stands with MacDonalds; and carpet sellers assuring you that it wasn't possible to leave Turkey without a carpet with...oops, they weren't replaced but their status had been bolstered with cep telefonu and instant messaging. Ms. Branning's keen observations, based on years of travel (and trevail) in Turkey make this book an excellent read for all. -Jeff Oliver
